The Town of Blaine is dedicating a marker for the Evergreen Cemetery on June 28th. Below is the text of a flier announcing the ceremony. This marker is at Stop #5 of the NBWA auto tour. In a addition there will be a permanent bench installed. From the flier (you can download a copy below): "Dedication
Ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery
Please join us for this important ceremony. Please join us at 10:00 am Saturday, June 28th at the Evergreen Cemetery for a short dedication ceremony in recognition of this historically important “Early Settlers and American Indian” cemetery in eastern Blaine Township. (Rain Date: Sunday, June 29th at 10:00 am) A beautiful, large granite marker has been graciously donated to be permanently located in this cemetery with this inscription:
THE PEOPLE ARE NOW GONE AND THE LAND HAS BEEN RECLAIMED BY NATURE. THE PAST ALMOST FORGOTTEN. THESE INHOSPITABLE BARRENS SAW THE INDIVIDUAL SACRIFICE AND HARDSHIPS OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS AND EARLY SETTLERS IN THEIR ATTEMPT TO EKE OUT A LIVING IN THE NON-FERTILE ENVIRONMENT. EVERGREEN CEMETERY REMAINS AS A MEMORIAL TO THE STRENGTH AND COURAGE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO ONCE LIVED HERE. IT WILL SERVE AS A REMINDER TO FUTURE GENERATIONS TO PAUSE AND GIVE TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE THEM. In addition, a permanent park bench has been installed for people to take a rest and contemplate what occurred in this land by the hardy people that lived here so many years before us.
From WI Highway 35: Go east on St. Croix Trail 7 ½ miles to Dry Landing Road and turn south ½ mile to Evergreen Cemetery.
Please join us for this important ceremony." |
